PDS/OSIcom - Office box

… is a telephony appliance of the x86_32(i586) architecture assumingly produced in the early years of the 2000 millenium by JUMPtec 1). It is unknown to me how many of these devices where produced and sold. Anyway I can tell that the architecture design of this machine is leads to a very sophisticated platform for industry use. The distributor PDS is responsible for the software lineup on this machine, that includes a LINUX kernel from the 2.2 series on a 'debian'-ish system using hylafax to do the actual work. Its accompanied by some special homebrewn software from PDS that drives platform-specific hardware (mainly the LED-bar on the front).

Name and Type

The “PDS/OSIcom office box” is a mysterious system. On the net, information about this machine is very rare. Reliable source of information is available neither on the manufacturer, nor on the machine itself. On one hand, the name suggests small office use of this system. On the other, 3 ISDN BRI for a FAX machine (allowing a total of 6 simultanous FAXes) suggests medium office use.

Casing

The machine case is a custom proprietary measured metal box. The only standard measured factors on the case are the slots for expansion and base board as well as the floppy drive cutout. The pictures probably tell a lot more about that machine than any description else would.

1) , 5) which I assume because the hardware is labeled that way internally. externally there is no sign of JUMPtec. The Box is labeled OSIcom on the front, “PDS OSIcom” on the type plate and JUMPtec on the inside…
2) where the operating system supports it, this would be the 'hostname' of the system.
